What is digital abuse? This is a term that has been gaining more attention as a rising form of abuse as the use of new technology becomes a larger part of our day to day lives. Many people are still unfamiliar with what this refers to or what constitutes digital abuse. As with some other forms of injustice committed against others, this type can be more subtle and less obvious than other offenses. This can make it more difficult to identify. The matter is further complicated by educating the public on the proper boundaries that should be maintained when using technology to communicate with partners and potential partners. Technology has been evolving faster than our ability to define ethical boundaries. Our privacy is much harder to protect in the digital world and it is much easier for others to reach out to us. This has paved the way for digital abuse to become more common place. Recent research suggests that one in four teens have experienced digital abuse (That's Not Cool, 2016).

What is Digital Abuse?

Digital abuse is the use of technology to stalk, harass, intimidate, or bully someone (The Hotline, 2014). This can include things like repeated and unwanted phone calls, text or social media messages, or repeated pressure to send nude photos or videos (WFC, 2012). The abuse may also extend to a person demanding passwords to online accounts, to view history of messages with others, or to limit who someone can communicate with on social media (MCCS, 2016). Digital abuse can be quite psychologically damaging and while it occurs in the digital world, it can have some significant real life impacts.

Protect Yourself & Others Against Digital Abuse

It is important to establish proper boundaries for what kind of behavior is acceptable between you and your partner. Do not tolerate or perpetuate poor behavior online. It is important that we establish these ethical boundaries as new technology becomes available. Keep yourself and others safe by being up to date on what abuse looks like and how it differs from healthy relationships.
