Woman suspended in bondage ropeWhile it is conceivable that rope bondage spans back much farther, the Edo period in Japan (1603-1867) is widely considered the birth time of modern rope based bondage. It was during this time that rope became a critical part of law enforcement, with enforcers using rope to capture, bind, and restrain criminal suspects. This use continued to evolve over the following 200 years, developing into an obscure martial art commonly known as HojoJutsu (Jade Rope, 2010). This form of Japanese martial art was used until the WWII era (LqqkOut). Sadly much of the history of this fabulous art is not readily available.

Rope Maintenance & Care

Rope requires the same level of attention as any other toy to ensure rewarding and safe play. Each person has their own method for storing their rope but it is beneficial, especially for those starting out, to organize their rope at the end of a session for proper storage. Handling the rope at this time increases you familiarity with how the rope feels and moves in your hands (Scribd Inc., 2012).

It is important to set aside a specific area for your play ropes that is clean and dry so that your ropes will not experience any water damage. You can coil your rope for storage easily by gathering the two ends evenly in one hand, wind the doubled rope from hand to elbow while leaving about a yard of the doubled line free at the end. Once gathered up, use the remaining doubled line to wrap around your coil then simply tuck the last bit under your last wrap with a bit of the end sticking out. If done correctly, the bit tucked under will be the center of your rope, allowing for an easy transition when you go to play again (Midori, 2001).

Like any piece of clothing or other play equipment it is important to keep your rope clean. It is also important to be sensible about when to clean your rope, not only to prevent a negative play experience using soiled rope but also because excessive washing will break down your rope more quickly (Midori, 2001).

If you are only playing with one partner or the bondage is being done over clothes, you will not have to wash your rope as frequently. The exposure of the rope to blood, saliva, sex fluids, sweat or any other fluids will also have an effect on the frequency in which you will need to clean your rope. You may wish to develop a different method of tying ropes after a session to distinguish the soiled ropes in need of washing from ropes ready to be used for next play (Midori, 2001).

When it comes time to clean your ropes you can choose to hand wash them. You may also wash them using a washing machine on the gentle cycle; to save yourself time untangling your rope you can place the rope in a mesh lingerie bag. You should use only a mild detergent and avoid using fabric softener. You can line dry your rope in large loops to prevent it from drying in a tight coil. You should not place the rope in the dryer as it may cause the rope to shrink unpredictably (Midori, 2001).

If you have soiled rope from a play partner where you are uncertain of their sexual health or STI status, it is your call on how you choose to proceed. For maximum safety, it is best to dispose of the soiled rope and acquire some new rope. If you wish, your rope can also be washed with a mild bleach solution (following instructions given on bottle) which will destroy many STI transmissions. Please ensure to refresh yourself on current STI information to stay safe when using your rope.
