There is no obvious trigger for outbreaks and some people tend to have more outbreaks than others. Many people have noticed that an outbreak is more likely in combination with the following conditions

  • General illness (from mild to severe)
  • Fatigue
  • Immunosuppression from medication or AIDS
  • Physical or emotional stress
  • Menstruation
  • Trauma to the affected area
  • Sexual activity (PubMed Health, 2012).

Pregnant women can experience some complications if they have an active infection during childbirth and in these circumstances, they can pass the infection to the baby. Women who are experiencing an outbreak during pregnancy put the baby at risk for premature birth, brain infection, developmental delays, chronic skin infections, or death (PubMed Health, 2012). Other complications can occur if they virus spreads to other parts of the body such as the brain, eyes, liver, spinal cord, esophagus, or lungs. You are also more likely to get HIV with an active outbreak and engaging in sexual activity with a HIV positive individual (PubMed Health, 2012).
