Signs & Symptoms

Once infected with the virus, the incubation period can last from three to seven days before any symptoms are experienced though you remain contagious to others. Once an outbreak occurs, typical symptoms can include tingling or itching followed by a redness of the skin before a blister forms. Once the blisters break, they form an ulcer that are usually painful to touch and can last seven days to two weeks. In women, additional symptoms can include vesicles (fluid-filled blisters) on the vaginal opening or vulva. Women can also experience inflammation of the cervix or pain during urination leading to infection of their urethra (MedicineNet, 2012).
