Lymphogranuloma Venerum (LGV) is a long-term lymphatic infection (A.D.A.M Medical Encyclopedia, 2013). It is caused by L1, L2, and L3 of Chlamydia trachomatis (Bushnell, 2013). LGV used to be a rare STI but it has recently been seen remerging in Canada despite there it having had the most documented cases in the past in more tropical areas such as Asia, South America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Since 2004, cases have been reported in Canada, US, Netherlands, and other European countries (Health Canada, 2013).

How Can I Get LGV?

LGV is passed through sexual contact and is more common in men than women (A.D.A.M Medical Encyclopedia, 2013). Unprotected oral, anal, or vaginal sex can lead to transmission. You can also contract LGV from the use of dildos or unprotected fisting (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2013).

Prevention

Being knowledgeable and practicing safe sex is always the way to prevent the transmission of STIs and LGV is not different. It is important to remember

  • Practice safe sex
  • Ensure proper screenings of all sexual partners
  • Avoid sharing personal items like toothbrushes, nail clippers, or razors
  • Refrain from sharing drug needles or other drug paraphernalia (straws for snorting, etc)
  • Ensure to properly clean all toys used in play
  • If cleaning up blood, use a solution that includes 1 part bleach to 10 parts water (PubMed Health, 2012)
