How is PID Treated?

A physical examination can be used to diagnose PID as well as some lab tests such as tests to look for common causes of PID or a CT scan or ultrasound can be used to rule out other causes of your symptoms (Medline Plus, 2012). PID can, fortunately, be cured with several different types of antibiotics. Immediate treatment can serve to prevent long lasting effects but treatment will not reverse any damage already done (CDC, 2012). Common antibiotic treatments are done by injection or orally and the symptoms may go away before the treatment is complete but it is important to complete treatment to ensure the infection does not return. In some cases, such as when the woman is extremely ill, pregnant, or unresponsive to medication, women can be hospitalized for treatment and monitoring. In some cases surgery may be required if the damage has advanced and abscesses or heavy scarring have developed (CDC, 2012).
